Ever looking to branch out to different cookie offerings? Maybe you don’t want to stay on campus for a sweet treat— but maybe that’s also your best option.
I went around and tried a classic and a seasonal offering of the cookie variety all over Baton Rouge so you don’t have to, unless of course you want to. Here are four establishments around town that are sure to satisfy your craving.
Great American Cookies
Original Chocolate Chip 6/10
This cookie was exactly what you would expect out of this southern bakery. It first brings a sense of nostalgia, for me at least, to my time as a youth running around the Mall of Louisiana. It has the classic taste as any chocolate chip cookie would.
It was moist and doughy, but nothing that I would go out of my way to retrieve, aside from memories.
Pumpkin Spice 7/10
The seasonal option was of course a pumpkin flavor. Confectionary sugar was added to the top of this equally doughy cookie to make it stand out from the rest. It was not an overwhelming flavor, which is a good thing, but it did give me some type of fall feeling.
Crumbl Cookies
Milk Chocolate Chip 8/10
Crumbl will do it a little different than others. No matter if they are changing their lineup each week, there is bound to be a classic chocolate chip. This cookie was thick and sweet with crisp edges and just a little dry.
Because this cookie was hot, the rich milk chocolate melts in your mouth. You could tell they were trying to out-do the original, and it stood out to me that way.
Pumpkin Brownie 9/10
This was a new addition to the menu and I can assure you: it did not disappoint.
The brownie cookie was topped with pumpkin frosting lightly coated with chocolate ganache. It was served cold, but that did not take away from the prominent tasting of pumpkin perfectly complimenting the brownie. This cookie was extravagant, but why else would you go to Crumbl?
Insomnia Cookies
Chocolate Chunk 7/10
You don’t have to go too far off of LSU campus for a nice chocolate chip cookie. No two cookies looked the same, just like how it would be in grandma’s kitchen.
The chocolate pieces melted well with the “just came out of the oven” doughy flavor. This homemade flavor paired with the ambiance of Highland Coffees made this experience worth it.
Candy Apple 8/10
There was no pumpkin offering here, but what replaced it was revolutionary.
Still having that homemade feeling, this sugar cookie mixed with different chocolate candies and dried apples was delicious.
There was no sense of eating an entire apple with the flavors of M&Ms mixed with the dried fruit. This cookie was a nice way to feel that Halloween spirit without going overboard with pumpkin flavor.
Starbucks
Chocolate Chip 10/10
Now I can state with full confidence that this is the best classic chocolate chip cookie that I have tasted to date. It was rich chocolate pieces in the “kiss” shape and square pieces. They melted almost too well.
The rim of the cookie was just crisp enough, and even though it was warm, it did not fall apart in my hands. There truly are no more words to this magnificent cookie. I myself will be wishing I had one at all hours of the day.
Maple Bacon 6/10
Again, there was no pumpkin flavor treat aside from the cheesecake, but what was offered was a cookie with maple and bacon flavor.
I was fearful of this cookie but was surprised by the taste. It was like eating a cookie mixed with syrup instead of water, in a good way. It was a little flimsy to eat with a ‘crunchy’ edge and not ‘crisp’. Added to the top were little pieces of bacon that I barely noticed. But overall thought it was bold of Starbucks to try this.
Any of the listed cookie dealers should be more than equipped to satisfy your craving. I can only conclude that any of these establishments is a worthy opponent.
No matter how much money you have or how far you are willing to go, there will be a cookie for each and every one of you. I hope you all got sweet treats this season because you deserve it.
