New Wave originated in the UK during the late 70s and 80s. It was originally a catch-all term for popular music after punk. Later, it boiled down to the humorous tone, danceability, angular guitar riffs, synth-pop, and high pitched vocals. The New Wave name comes from the 50s French New Wave Cinema movement. Also, New Romantic is somewhat of a subgenre to New Wave inspired by Glam Rock and 1700s and 1800s Romantic period (mostly fashion wise). New Wave and New Romantic were eventually replaced by guitar-driven sounds such as grunge and indie rock.
