Grunge is the Seattle Sound. It’s the mixture of punk and metal defined by it’s distorted guitars and introspective lyrics. It’s also purely a genre that never thought it would get big, but thanks to Sub Pop, it became a phenomenon. Sub Pop is a Seattle based record label that signed all the major grunge bands.
Eventually grunge became a marketing ploy– its sound and fashion became highly commercialized. The genre reached its height in the 90s, but quickly faded. Even so, grunge has heavily influenced modern rock as we know it.
