LSU sophomore forwards Jarell Martin and Jordan Mickey have been named First-Team All-Southeastern Conference selections by league coaches, the league office announced Tuesday.
After leading the nation in blocks, Mickey was also named to the SEC’s All-Defensive team for the second consecutive season.
It marks the first time since 2009 coaches voted two Tigers on the first team and 13th overall in program history.
Martin and Mickey have been the main pillars this season for LSU (22-9, 11-7 SEC), which finished with the fourth-best record in the SEC and earned a double bye for this weekend’s conference tournament in Nashville, Tennessee.
The 22 wins are the most for LSU since its last NCAA Tournament team in the 2008-09 season.
Martin, a Baton Rouge native, was the SEC third-best scorer with a team-high 16.9 points per game. Martin scored at least 20 points 10 times and averaged 19.6 points on 61.9 percent shooting in the final eight games of the regular season.
Martin scored 27 points against No. 21 Arkansas on Saturday, including 16 on 7-of-10 shooting in the second half. He also played a game-high 40 minutes and grabbed eight rebounds.
Aside from leading the Tigers in scoring, Martin was second in rebounds per game (9.0) and total minutes (1,076). He also finished fourth in the SEC in field goal percentage, shooting 51.5 percent from the field this season.
Mickey was an SEC Player of the Year candidate for much of the season before battling injuries down the stretch, but the Dallas native still enjoyed one of the most impressive seasons for a Tiger in recent memory.
Aside from being the nation’s leading shot blocker, Mickey finished as the SEC’s top rebounder with 9.9 boards per game. He also finished fourth in the SEC in field goal percentage (51.7 percent) and fifth in scoring (16 points ppg). Mickey also tallied 15 double-doubles, giving him 24 in his two-year career.
Despite sitting out Saturday’s game with a shoulder injury, Mickey still finished as the nation’s top shot blocker with 106 rejections, a mark he reached as a freshman last season.
Mickey became the second player in LSU history to record consecutive 100-block seasons, joining Tiger great Shaquille O’Neal. After two seasons, Mickey currently sits behind O’Neal at No. 2 in school history with 212 blocks.
Martin and Mickey were All-Freshmen selections last year for the Tigers, who were knocked out in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament. Mickey also earned a Second-Team All-SEC nod to go with his All-Defensive selection last season.
