The No. 5 LSU softball team cruised by Arkansas, 6-0, on Saturday in Game 2 of this weekend’s series.
The Tigers (24-0) remained unbeaten with the win against the Razorbacks (12-9), but two individuals stole the show by rewriting the LSU record book.
Sophomore right fielder Bailey Landry hit safely for the 16th consecutive game, breaking the record set by her teammate, senior center fielder A.J. Andrews, last season. Junior shortstop Bianka Bell hit the 34th home run of her career to pass former LSU outfielder Rachel Mitchell for the most all-time.
“It’s crazy to think that when [Bianka] was a freshman we all knew she could set that record,” LSU coach Beth Torina said. “It’s nice to see her actually accomplish it. She’s done some great things in this program. She just continues to get better and better every time she takes the field, and we still have a lot more to see from her in her career.”
In the bottom of the first, Andrews and Landry went down in order. Bell stepped up to the plate with two outs and unleashed the record-breaking home run to center field to give LSU a 1-0 lead.
She rounded the bases and was mobbed at home plate by her teammates. Bell said it’s an honor to be among LSU greats, but she recognizes she still has work to do.
“It’s a great feeling and it’s nice to bask in it for a little bit, but I know that I still have a lot to work on and I’m really excited about it,” Bell said.
A two-RBI double by Bell in the bottom of the third extended LSU’s lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the fifth it was Bailey Landry’s turn to make some history. She hit a chopper to shortstop and beat the throw to stretch her hitting streak to 16 games, the longest in program history.
Landry said she isn’t focused on getting hits but performing the job her team needs her to do.
“When I go up to bat I don’t really think, ‘Get a hit, get a hit,'” Landry said. “I just really look to see what the defense is giving me, what runners we have on, just really what my team needs for me to do.”
Landry has hit safely in every game since LSU’s 3-2 win against Notre Dame on Feb. 14.
LSU hitting coach Howard Dobson said Landry has done a good job learning from her previous at-bats to be more successful in the following ones.
The Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth through singles from sophomore second baseman Constance Quinn and freshman left fielder Emily Griggs, stretching LSU’s lead to 6-0.
Freshman pitcher Allie Walljasper didn’t need much support. She threw a complete game shutout, allowing only four hits in seven innings of work. Walljasper finished with four strikeouts and just one walk on 95 pitches.
“It was an awesome feeling to be able to go out there and pitch my first SEC start and to have all of the infield and outfield behind me and the dugout cheering me on the whole time,” Walljasper said. ”It made it 10 times easier to go out there for the first time..”
LSU concludes its series with Game 3 against Arkansas at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Tiger Park.
