Three years before the University of Oklahoma shuttered its campus chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon for chanting racial slurs during a fraternity event, LSU’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity was thrown off campus for sexual misconduct and hazing incidents.
LSU’s SAE chapter became inactive in fall 2012. The Daily Reveille, the student newspaper, reported at the time that the fraternity would be reinstated this fall, but Sigma Alpha Epsilon National Communications Director Matt Alaio said Wednesday he did not know when the LSU chapter would be reinstated at LSU.
Oklahoma President David Boren quickly suspended the fraternity Monday and ordered all members to vacate the fraternity house.
However, LSU Assistant dean and Director of Greek Life Angela Guillory indicated late Wednesday night she would need more information before she could evaluate Boren’s response to the Oklahoma incident or, in a hypothetical situation, urge similar action should LSU be confronted with a like situation at LSU.
“(Oklahoma) university and SAE national organization have (more) information than I do and (that is why) I am not able to give an appropriate response,” said Guillory, pointing to the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity suspension at the University of Virginia last year after a Rolling Stone article accused a PKP member of rape. “Administrators at UVA acted without knowing the truth about the situation.”
The LSU Code of Conduct for the general student population does not specifically include the use of racial slurs or acts of bigotry in listing campus conduct that is forbidden.
Under behavioral misconduct, the LSU code has subsections for alcohol, complicity in misbehavior, computer misuse, disorderly conduct, disruption/obstruction, drugs, endangerment, failure to comply with an order by a university official or violating university rules, providing false information, forgery, harassment, hazing, misuse of identity, offensive behavior, property misuse, tampering with safety devices and unauthorized entry, unauthorized solicitation, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, stalking, theft, unauthorized surveillance and carrying weapons.
The subsection on offensive behavior defines it only in sexual terms as “lewd, indecent, or obscene conduct, including, but not limited to, nudity or sexually explicit behavior that would reasonably be offensive to others.”
LSU’s fraternity and sorority student leaders released a 25-word statement late Tuesday night expressing disapproval for Oklahoma SAE chapter’s actions, but refused to discuss the racial atmosphere at LSU’s Greek houses or whether there have been incidents in the past.
“As the LSU Inter-fraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Greek Board of Directors, we do not tolerate discrimination in any shape or form,” the statement read.
