The LSU sand volleyball team will host the Tiger Sand Tournament this weekend in its first home meet of the season. The team will try to rebound after losing three of four matches last weekend in Florida.
The Tiger Sand Tournament will begin today at 5 p.m. when the Tigers (3-6) host the University of New Orleans, followed by a 6 p.m. match against North Florida. Tournament play will continue Saturday at 11 a.m. when the Tigers will have a re-match against Florida International, which defeated the Tigers last weekend. LSU wraps up Saturday with a 2 p.m. start against Spring Hill.
The tournament will conclude Sunday with Pairs Bracket Play, which begins at 9 a.m., as pairs will be playing in a single elimination tournament.
“We’re Glad to be at home this week.” said sand volleyball coach Russell Brock. “It gives us an extra day to prepare, not having to use a travel day and we can focus more on the things we need to work on.”
The Tigers went 1-3 last week, losing matches against Jacksonville and Georgia State by one set each. Florida International was the third team to defeat the Tigers last weekend, this time by a score of 5-0. However, FIU is one of the top ranked teams in the country, and the Tigers knew they would have to play near perfect to pull off the upset.
Coming off of a disappointing weekend, the Tigers will try to bounce back and focus on improving the things they worked on in practice.
“We had time this week to develop a chemistry and communications with our pairs,” Brock said. “Them having time to work together this week will help a lot, and we’ll be more consistent in our pairs.”
Home sand advantage will be huge for the Tigers this weekend. The fans will see LSU compete against other universities for the first time this season, and the team is eager to show its improvement.
“The sand volleyball community is very strong and smart, and they know the game,” Brock said. “We know we’re a better and more talented team than the last time they saw us compete, and it won’t go unnoticed. We’re excited to have a chance to impress them.”
