After earning its fourth Southeastern Conference series victory over the weekend, the No. 3 LSU softball team continued to roll with a dominant 13-4 win against in-state opponent McNeese State on Wednesday night in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Despite tallying three errors in the first two innings, LSU’s (39-5, 11-4 SEC) bats caught fire, exploding to score four or more runs in the second, third and fourth innings and loading the bases in each of those innings.
The Tigers’ defensive struggles put their lineup behind by two runs against McNeese (26-18, 12-5 Southland) heading into the top of second after the Tigers allowed two uncharacteristic errors.
In the second, the Tigers’ lineup found rhythm at the plate by taking advantage of Cowgirls’ junior starting pitcher Emily Vincent’s (10-6) three straight walks to lead off the second inning.
After freshman pitcher Allie Walljasper popped up to record the first out, senior center fielder A.J. Andrews drove in the Tigers’ first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field.
On the next at-bat, sophomore right fielder Bailey Landry loaded the bases again by drawing the fifth walk from McNeese. Junior shortstop Bianka Bell closed out the inning with a two-RBI single up the middle, which scored another run on the throw and allowed LSU to take a 4-2 lead.
Sophomore third baseman Sahvanna Jaquish drew a leadoff walk, junior catcher Kellsi Kloss singled and junior first baseman Sandra Simmons singled to the pitcher to stack the bases for the second-straight inning with no outs in
the third.
Senior designated player Dylan Supak and junior left fielder Alayna Falcon drove in runs with a sacrifice fly and a ground out, respectively, to extend the Tigers’ lead to 6-2.
After the Tigers loaded the bases again in the third inning, Andrews scored on an illegal pitch by Cowgirls’ freshman pitcher Jolie Trahan (10-5). Landry then drove in two runs with her second RBI hit of the day to close out the Tigers’
five-run third inning.
Falcon stole the show in the fourth inning with her first home run of her
career.
After Jaquish doubled, Simmons and senior pinch hitter Kailey McCasland singled to reach base, Falcon stepped up to the plate and took the fifth pitch she saw the distance for a back-breaking grand slam.
While the Tigers created individual highlight reels at the plate, Walljasper kept the Cowgirls’ lineup in check. Despite struggling with walks, she finished with three walks to only one strikeout in four innings of work.
In the fifth, LSU coach Beth Torina gave sophomore pitcher Baylee Corbello an opportunity to pitch in front of her
hometown crowd.
After putting away the first two batters she faced, Corbello allowed a walk, bringing McNeese’s home run leader, freshman catcher Erika Piancastelli, to the plate.
On the third pitch of the at-bat, Corbello missed her spot in the zone and Piancastelli made her pay with a two-run bomb, for the fifth homer Corbello has allowed this season.
The Tigers return to Baton Rouge this weekend to host No. 24 Texas A&M, starting with Game 1 at 6 p.m. Saturday at Tiger Park.
