The No. 16 LSU softball notched its first win against a ranked opponent in 2015 with a 3-2 victory against No. 20 Notre Dame Saturday afternoon in game one of a double header in the 2015 Tiger Invitational.
The Tigers (8-0) relied on solid defense late and the bullpen to earn its first one-run victory of the season.
LSU took control in the first inning by scoring three runs on two hits, including a ground-rule double by sophomore third baseman Sahvanna Jaquish. But, the Irish (5-2) had opportunities late, loading the bases during the sixth and seventh innings.
In the sixth, freshman pitcher Allie Walljasper replaced freshman starter Carley Hoover after she gave up her sixth hit. Notre Dame loaded the bases with no outs, but Walljasper got out of the inning with a strikeout and a double play by her defense.
The Irish loaded the bases again in the seventh with one out, but the Tigers closed out the win by retiring the the lead runner at home and Walljasper’s third strikeout of the game.
