Tonight, New Orlean’s Cowboy Mouth will hit the Varsity Theatre stage with its spirited rock sound.
Cowboy Mouth lead vocalist Fred LeBlanc said the band’s set will consist of a rotation between new and old songs.
“[We] give the fans what they want to hear, but at the same time, you know, we like to challenge ourselves too,” he said.
While the band rose to fame in the ‘90s, it maintained a longevity through releasing a steady stream of material throughout the years. The most recent record, “GO!,” was released in 2014.
Cowboy Mouth’s sound is influenced by electric blues-rock, rockabilly and southern flavor, with hints of pop punk. The band is most known for its hit “Jenny Says.”
LeBlanc said Lyrics remain extremely important for him, as he aims to create a positive atmosphere where a fan or casual listener can actively participate in the schema of the show.
“You can’t do anything crazier or dumber than I will, so let yourself go, don’t worry about looking stupid,” he said.
LeBlanc said the importance of being able to “figure out what you’re good at and run with it” is what gives Cowboy Mouth an advantage on the stage and in the studio.
The goal of each venue played is to have attendees “leave a Cowboy Mouth show feeling a lot better than they did when they first came in,” LeBlanc said.
While receiving positive feedback on its records is important, LeBlanc said the true inspiration of Cowboy Mouth comes from both within and touching the lives of fans. He said one experience which went beyond the music is a specific fan who fought a drug addiction and was aided by Cowboy Mouth’s “I Believe.”
“I always view it as a honor or gift when people take something we do and use it as a positive change in their lives,” he said.
Cowboy Mouth’s show at the Varsity begins at 9 p.m., doors open at 8 p.m.
