Because of helmets, some would say that football is the most “unknown” sport because it is hard to see the players’ faces.
To demonstrate this, LSU cornerback Tre’Davious White asked people around campus if they knew who he was for a school assignment. The majority of the people he interviewed were completely unaware they were speaking to White.
“Do you know Tre’Davious White?”
“I have no idea who that is man.”
White and the rest of the team have a hugely important job both as individuals, and as a collective. Both the offensive and defensive lines contribute to the team’s success, but some people pass these players by everyday and do not even know they are part of the team they cheer for every weekend. People recognize the players’ size and warm-up gear, and guess that they “might” be on the team.
However, there is one player that everyone seems to know the name of.
“Number seven. Can’t be stopped.”
That’s right, Leonard Fournette. Fournette is all over the media. He graces the covers of magazines like ESPN and Sports Illustrated. A quick Google search yields over two million articles about the star athlete in just seconds.
For some, Fournette has quickly become the symbol of LSU football. While this may seem to be a disadvantage to other players on the team who do not receive the same kind of recognition, AdFed president Nichole Wierschem said that Fournette’s positive image in the media benefits LSU’s football department as a whole.
“Fournette has spearheaded the team in a more positive direction, which I think in the media is really good for us,” Wierschem said. “You haven’t heard of any of our players getting in trouble because they are under such a tight eye because of Fournette there. In a sense, it has helped the team become an overall better team, and it’s helped LSU [football’s] advertising and branding department.”
