The 72nd Annual Golden Globes hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler aired on Sunday night, officially kicking off the 2015 awards show season.
While other award ceremonies that cater to television and film such as the Screen Actors Guild Awards or the Oscars tend to be quite stuffy, the Golden Globes are known to be a night where Hollywood lets loose.
The bottles of champagne flowing at every table into the flutes of actors such as Ethan Hawke and Viola Davis made room for a bubbly show.
The night started with a hilarious opening monologue from Fey and Poehler that had the crowd rolling with jokes. Everything from the nominees’ looks and North Korea (thanks to “The Interview”) were fair game. However, the jokes about Bill Cosby and the allegations of sexual assault against him made the crowd gasp, tensing up the room.
Thankfully, the hostesses of the night were able to quickly rebound from the brief awkwardness thanks to better jokes and a fast-paced show.
The Golden Globes are known for putting a spotlight on new talent which is exactly what happened when newcomer Gina Rodriquez took home a trophy for Best Actress in a TV Comedy for her role in “Jane the Virgin.” Rodriguez’s win marks a first for her, but also the first Golden Globe win for The CW network.
Other first-time winners included Joanne Froggatt (“Downton Abbey”), Billy and Bob Thornton (“Fargo”), and Patricia Arquette (“Boyhood”).
There were various tributes throughout the night for the “Je Suis Charlie” movement in support of freedom of speech after the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, France. George Clooney wore a Je Suis Charlie pin on his tux and, while presenting an award, actor Jared Leto spoke to French viewers saying, “On vous aime, je suis Charlie” which is translated as “We love you, I am Charlie.”
The Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement award was presented to George Clooney by Julianne Margulies and Don Cheadle. Clooney reassured everyone in the room (including the losers) that everyone who made it into that room is actually a winner. He also used his speech to speak about his solidarity with demonstrators in France and everyone who is a part of the Je Suis Charlie movement.
The big wins of the night for Best Motion Picture went to “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (Comedy or Musical) and “Boyhood” (Drama).
While the Golden Globes may have wrapped up, awards show season is officially in full swing. Keep up with all of our coverage of the Grammys and the Oscars on LSUReveille.com/Entertainment and on Twitter @LSUReveilleNow.
