Beginning as early at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, a mass of local public-school teachers stormed the steps of the state Capitol to protest Gov. Bobby Jindal’s education reform package. Jindal’s bills would amplify state aid given to students who attend private or parochial schools, toughen tenure laws for teachers and restructure the state’s early-childhood education system. The first of the three bills, debated and voted on Wednesday night, passed 12 to 6 in the House Education Committee.
