Despite finals week quickly approaching, some University students took a study break Tuesday night to learn to shake their hips and salsa dance.
Student Activities Board and Phi Beta Sigma sponsored
“Dance the Night Away Salsa” featuring Ric Seeling, a salsa instructor of 37 years.
“Left and left, right and right,” were the simple steps Seeling called out to instruct the students.
Accounting freshman Kristen Smith, said the event has been held before, and the group decided to bring it back because salsa is a fresh dance with a lightened feel.
“I think about it as a big party to blow off steam before finals,” Smith said.
She said the dance is appealing because the music makes people want to shimmy and shake. The various instruments of salsa bands make the music enjoyable, Smith said.
“Ballroom is a hobby of mine,” said John Starns, history junior.
Starns said he is enrolled in a ballroom class at LSU, which Seeling’s wife teaches, and he has been to Seeling’s studio with friends. He said he finds salsa dancing entertaining.
Sociology junior Brianna Thompson said she scheduled a ballroom class for the fall semester. She said the clothing style for salsa is sexy and she enjoys the music.
After the dancers learned the basics with Seeling, they salsa danced through the night to Fredy Omar con su Banda in the Union Ballroom.
