Coming into Sunday’s contest, LSU boasted a 14-4 record in one run games and a 3-1 record when facing extra innings. The law of averages caught up to the Tigers (39-13, 17-10, Southeastern Conference) on Sunday. Vanderbilt second baseman Tony Kemp laced a two out RBI single to center field in the tenth inning to put the Commodores (25-25, 13-14 SEC) ahead for good as they rallied back to win 5-4 and take the series from the Tigers. “This was a tough one” said LSU head coach Paul Mainieri. “This is a game we could have, should have won.” In a game that saw 14 walks and featured seven pitchers between the two teams, the Tigers couldn’t muster enough offense to answer Vanderbilt’s rallies in the ninth and tenth inning. With the Tigers ahead 4-3 in the top of the ninth, Vanderbilt right fielder Mike Yastrzemski launched a solo home run off of Tiger closer Nick Goody to knot the score at four, giving Goody his first blown save in ten opportunities. The Tigers were unable to answer in the bottom of the ninth or tenth inning, going down in order to Vanderbilt closer Will Clinard on both occasions, sending the Tigers to their first SEC series loss at home. “They got on top early and we fought and came back,” said junior right fielder Mason Katz. “We kept fighting, but they did a better job at the end of the day.” Mainieri flip flopped senior shortstop Austin Nola and junior center fielder Arby Fields in the batting order, giving Nola the opportunity to lead off for the first time in his collegiate career. The senior did not disappoint, turning in a 2-for-3 afternoon and reaching base four times to pace the Tigers. “I was seeing the ball well today,” Nola said. “I felt comfortable out there, I was trying to have good at-bats for my teammates.” Vanderbilt opened the scoring in the second inning with a Vince Cond sacrifice fly and a Jack Lupo RBI single to put the Commodores up 2-0. The Tigers responded with an RBI single from Katz and a sacrifice fly from freshman first baseman Tyler Moore to tie the score at two. Single runs in the fourth for LSU and the fifth for Vanderbilt tied the score once again until the eighth inning when Nola’s sacrifice fly scored senior third baseman Tyler Hanover, and set the stage for the ninth inning. The Tigers will look to rebound from the series loss in their final regular season game at Alex Box Stadium on Tuesday against Nicholls St. at 6:30.
