Anchor [Steven Powell]: Members of education institutions across Baton Rouge met last night to discuss a hot topic: diversity. Reveille Radio’s Marylee Williams attended last night’s event.
Reporter [Marylee Williams]: Last night Southern University, BRCC and LSU held Diverse Dialogues.
About 100 student and faculty from each institution listened to a panel of three professors and three students from each college discuss diversity and what it means to a community.
BRCC Computer Science major Amanda Salom told audience members the theme of this event was “We the People — A Circle of Unity.”
Assistant professor Stephen Finley and finance senior Daniel Toro represented LSU.
Toro said Wednesday night was his first time attending the event, but diversity is an important issue to him.
Co-anchor of ABC’s Primetime, John Quiñones (Keyn-ou-nez) moderated the discussion. He asked questions that not only pertained to ethnic diversity, but economic, age and gender diversity.
Finley said he understood economic challenges, but cautioned the audience not to let obstacles become excuses.
Diverse Dialogues is a collaborative event through BRCC’S Office of Student Programs and Resources, LSU’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, and Southern University’s Office of Student Programs.
