Update 10:45 a.m.:

LSU Police arrested general business student Jeffery C. Henley Jr., 20, early Nov. 16 after he drove a black BMW through a guardrail and into the lake behind Miller Hall.

He was traveling with two unnamed passengers, one male and one female, at the time. They were transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

Henley, of 4009 Avenue H in Austin was charged with DWI, careless operation and open container, said LSUPD spokesman Capt. Cory Lalonde.

The BMW was traveling westbound on West Lakeshore Drive, but when it reached the curve at the Campus Lake Drive intersection, the BMW proceeded straight over a metal railing and crashed into a footbridge, before coming to rest in the lake.

Officers discovered a metal flask and an open bottle of whiskey in the vehicle when it was towed from the water.

Henley refused a chemical test for intoxication and was booked in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

 A now-tattered black BMW is soaking in the lake behind Miller Residence Hall after three University students, two male and one female, crashed the vehicle into it either late Thursday night or early Friday morning. The three sustained minor to moderate injuries but nothing severe, according to LSU Police Department spokesman Capt. Cory Lalonde.

Lalonde said the crash is still under investigation but it appears the students were traveling along W. Lakeshore Drive and didn’t make the curve when they reached Campus Drive. The BMW crashed into the railing the encloses the lake and the bridge over it, and the car proceeded into the water.

“Alcohol is possibly a factor,” Lalonde said.

The three students were transported to the hospital. The rail that the car hit is bent and one of the BMW’s tires sits below it. The partially-submerged four-door vehicle rests about five yards away.

Meredith Decoteau, a business freshman, said she and her friends were driving behind the BMW when they saw it hit the rail that encloses the lake. She said the vehicle didn’t appear to be moving faster than a normal pace.

“All I saw were the lights bobbing,” she said.

That’s when she and her friends noticed two males and a female who appeared to be students. They were dressed up – the men clad in sports coats, as though they were returning from a semi-formal, she said. The University’s Sigma Chi fraternity hosted its semi-formal Thursday night.

Decoteau and her friends went to help the three exit the car and called the police, she said.

The male back-seat passenger injured his shoulder and the female front-seat passenger seat was struck by the airbag, according Decoteau and freshman psychology major Michelle Vigil.

The black BMW has a Texas inspection sticker. Its indoor lights were on at 1:45 a.m., revealing inflated airbags, a wallet and loose change behind the cracked windshield. At the time, four police cars and one ambulance were at the scene as about 20 students peered over the bridge at the car.
