Embattled Penn State quarterback Robert Bolden may soon get a fresh start in Baton Rouge. A source told The Daily Reveille that Bolden, who has two years of eligibility remaining, has been removed from the Nittany Lion roster and was granted a release from his scholarship Sunday. GeauxTigerNation’s Gary Laney reported Bolden visited LSU Sunday, prompting speculation that the junior from Orchard Lake, Mich. will join the Tigers for his final two years. Bolden would add much-needed depth at quarterback behind Zach Mettenberger, joining redshirt freshmen Stephen Rivers and Jerrard Randall – both of whom have yet to take a college snap. A 6-foot-3, 214-pound dual threat quarterback, Bolden became the first freshman to start a season for Penn State since 1910 when he started the 2010 season opener against Youngstown State – a 44-14 win. Injuries derailed Bolden’s freshman season, prompting Matt McGloin to assume the starter’s role, and Bolden seeking a transfer after the season. After head coach Joe Paterno refused to grant Bolden a release from his scholarship, Bolden started eight games of his sophomore campaign, tossing two touchdowns and seven interceptions on the season. Replacing an injured McGloin in the TicketCity Bowl, Bolden had perhaps his worst game as a Nittany Lion, completing only seven passes and throwing three interceptions. If Bolden decides to finish his career in Baton Rouge, he’d be immediately eligible to join the Tigers as a result of NCAA sanctions handed down in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
