Billy Gonzales, LSU wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator, will assume the offensive coordinator position at a Big 10 school, LSU coach Les Miles announced Wednesday. Multiple reports indicate that school will be Illinois.
LSU Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette said Gonzales’ hire could be announced as early as tomorrow. Gonzales spent two seasons as one of LSU’s primary recruiters, mostly handling the Florida area after spending five seasons as a coach for the Florida Gators.
“This is a great promotion for Billy,” Miles said in a press release. “Billy will do a great job as an offensive coordinator. This is a tremendous opportunity for him and his family. We wish Billy, his wife Julie and their two children nothing but the best.”
Miles added that he will not rush to replace Gonzales.
“I’m not going to be in a hurry,” Miles said. “We are going to hire a great coach with an outstanding background.”
