Cycling enthusiasts can beat the sweltering heat and enjoy a Saturday morning ride on the levee as part of Student Recreation’s Adventure Education program.
Though the first ride was canceled because of inclement weather, two rides remain. The second ride will take place Saturday and the third ride is scheduled for July 14.
But riding next to the Mississippi River is not the only allure of the ride, according to Adventure Education Coordinator Chris Bullard.
“I think the coolest part is that we are riding to the Main Street Farmers Market,” he said. “You don’t need a bike either. We have plenty of bikes and helmets for anyone who wants to join.”
This Saturday is Star Spangled Saturday at the Red Stick Farmers’ Market. Student chefs from the Louisiana Culinary Institute will be on hand to give advice on patriotic picnic fare using fresh produce from the market. The chefs will also perform a cooking demonstration at 10 a.m. in the North Street Seating Area.
The event is not limited to students. Members of the Baton Rouge community can also join. Showing up at 10 a.m. is the only requirement.
The ride will begin at the UREC, proceed through campus, cross Nicholson Road and cross River Road before ascending to the top of the levee. Riders will then exit near Fourth Street before heading for Main Street.
Students will also receive a brief safety briefing before the ride, according to Marketing Director Scott Belanger.
