In a pivotal Southeastern Conference matchup, the LSU baseball team dropped game one of a three-game series at Ole Miss, 2-1, in front of 5,518 fans at O-U Stadium.
The loss puts the Tigers (21-12, 5-8) three games behind the division-leading Rebels (23-11, 8-5) in the SEC West standings.
Each team scored a run in the third inning. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the eighth when Ole Miss catcher Brett Basham hit a solo home run. Ole Miss later loaded the bases with no outs, but the Rebels were not able to score again.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, LSU designated hitter Blake Dean singled through the right side. The next batter, first baseman Matt Clark, struck out to end the game.
LSU’s only run came on a Ryan Schimpf home run.
The two teams resume their three-game series Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
