The LSU softball team needed two more runs going into the top of the fifth inning to run-rule Louisiana-Monroe. They got more than enough. The Tigers (35-14, 12-10) recorded five runs in the top of the fifth inning to beat the Warhawks, 11-0, Wednesday at the ULM Softball Complex. LSU beat UL-Monroe, 9-2, earlier this season at Tiger Park. The game’s attendance was 608, the largest crowd in ULM Softball Complex history and more than double the previous record. Most of the Tigers’ fifth-inning runs came from errors by the Warhawks (17-31, 7-11), who gave up a bases-loaded walk and three hit-by-pitches in the inning. Freshmen Casey Faile, Jessica Mouse and Tiffany Shaw were hit by UL-Monore pitchers Lindsay Rittenhouse and Shanna Swillie in three of four at-bats. “[The pitchers] just started pegging people [legitimatly],” said LSU senior catcher Killian Roessner. “It wasn’t like they were close pegs.” Sophomore Rachel Mitchell led things off in the first winning with a solo home run to right field. She finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs. “I just saw the ball really well tonight, and my timing was on,” Mitchell said. “I’ve been patient enough to make sure that I hit the pitch that I want to hit.” Mitchell has been on a recent hot streak, going 10-for-21 with 10 RBIs in her past eight games. She leads the team with a .355 batting average. “I told her we have her in the three hole to drive in runs,” said LSU coach Yvette Girouard said. “She’s just been aggressive, and she’s seeing the ball very well right now.” The Tigers collected four more runs – all with two outs – in the top of second inning. Freshman Casey Faile start in the circle for the Tigers, giving up only one hit and one walk in five innings while striking out four. “She was constantly working ahead,” Girouard said. “As a pitcher, that’s your biggest weapon.” The No. 15 Tigers play Arkansas this weekend in the final regular season series at Tiger Park. At least seven more games will be played at Tiger Park when LSU hosts the Southeastern Conference tournament May 8-10.
