As the Mississippi River slowly recedes, the Pontchatrain Levee District is inspecting for levee erosion along the 115-mile stretch it controls.
The river crested at 43.13 feet April 26. The river level was at 42.57 feet at 11 a.m. today and is expected to continue to fall slowly during the next several days. The river remains above flood stage – 35 feet – which it hit March 30.
The projected river stage by May 4 is 42.4 feet, according to the NOOA National Weather Service.
