Vice Chancellor for Student Life and Academic Services Neil Mathews has relinquished the duties of his job effective March 3, according to a press statement issued by Acting Chancellor William Jenkins.
Mathews will transition from his current position to “undertake some special assignments for the executive vice chancellor and provost until June 30,” according to the statement.
After June 30, Mathews will return to the faculty of the College of Education. Mathews previously served as dean of the college.
Eric Monday, associate vice chancellor for finance and administration, will serve as interim vice chancellor for Student Life and Academic Services.
The release does not cite any specific reasons for Mathews’ jobtransition or from whom the decision came.
Mathews authored the hotly debated first-year residency requirement proposal the LSU Board of Supervisors recently approved.
Mathews’ wife, Nancy Mathews, is the director of the Campus-Community Coalition for Change.
In 2005, Neil Mathews was a top candidate to be the provost at Missouri Western State University and considered leaving LSU for the job. He was one of the final three candidates for the position.
