University students boasted their leadership skills at this year’s No Frills conference at the University of Oklahoma. The National Residence Hall Honorary representatives and Residential Hall Association members traveled to the University of Oklahoma on Feb. 16 and 17 to collect ideas for improving on-campus residential life. The group brought back awards and leadership appointments. No Frills is a business conference held each year by the Southwest Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls to discuss certain residential issues and policies. The main purpose is to approve budgets and pass policies. Attendees also vote on the Regional Board of Directors for the new year. NRHH is a subgroup of SWACURH – one of the eight regions in the National Alliance of College and University Residence Halls. Timothy Gonzalez, computer science sophomore, said the conference helps universities learn from one another and gain new ideas to become better organizations. At this year’s conference, Gonzalez was elected SWACURH Regional Communications Coordinator for Records and Technology on the Regional Board of Directors. He is responsible for keeping track of the NACURH Web site and sending e-mails to keep members informed across the region. “I’m really excited about this,” Gonzalez said. “I’m keeping people in the know.” Patrick Haggerty, NRHH member and resident assistant, continues to serve as the Regional Director of SWACURH. The region consists of schools from Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Mexico. “Haggerty was very impressive as he led the boardroom,” said Nicholas Clegorne, Training and Development Coordinator for Residential Life, in an e-mail. Aryaz Sheybani, biology sophomore, is the National Communications Coordinator for RHA on campus and represented the University at this year’s No Frills conference. Clegorne said Sheybani served extremely well in his role as NCC. He said Sheybani was the voice of reason in the boardroom. Kathy Smith, RHA sophomore, was named “Regional Student of the Year.” This award is for an on-campus resident who excels in leadership and academics. The National Communication Coordinators across the Southwest region selected Smith after the University nominated her to represent the school.
