Rivalries make college football. The hatred between Michigan and Ohio State fans, the shared distrain of Texas and Oklahoma supporters — it’s feelings like these that make college football one of a kind.LSU and Ole Miss have met annually since 1945 and have historically had one of the most intense rivalries in the sport. But until this season, the two teams never actually played for anything. No golden boot is up for grabs like LSU and Arkansas’ yearly matchup. No battle for the little brown jug like Michigan and Minnesota. Nothing. But that all changed this year when the student governments from LSU and Ole Miss decided to spice things up a bit and give this rivalry a well-deserved title — the Magnolia Bowl, Louisiana and Mississippi’s state flower. And although LSU ended up on the wrong side of the win column in the first Magnolia Bowl, we think it was a success and will be in the future. For the past few years, the rivalry between the Tigers and Rebels had somewhat lost its luster. Ole Miss played LSU in some close games, like the Tigers’ 23-20 overtime win two years ago. But Ole Miss had lost six-straight games to LSU before this season. In that span, LSU’s program rose to even greater national prominence, while Ole Miss’ faded toward the bottom of the Southeastern Conference.”It’s lost it’s touch and flavor over the years,” Student Government Director of Athletics Andrew Remson said last week. “But Ole Miss is building a new program, and it’s going to be an exciting game.”It seemed fans were more into Saturday’s game than any LSU-Ole Miss contest in recent memory. That may have been because of the postseason implications that came along with the matchup, but the atmosphere was a perfect way for the new “Magnolia Bowl” to kick off.Not all rivalries deserve fancy names, but there’s just something unique about the history between certain schools that begs to be called something special. It’s really a wonder how LSU-Ole Miss went this long without an official name, and we look forward to seeing how future Magnolia Bowls play out.Plus, anytime fans of one team have a token cheer of telling the other to “go to hell,” you know there’s something more there.—-Contact the Editorial Board at [email protected]
