The much-anticipated return of the “Oh-Wee-Oh” chant is a possibility for Saturday’s game against Alabama, according to Rob Dowie, Tiger Band drum major. Band administrators will meet this week to decide if the student section’s post-touchdown behavior was decent enough to earn back the banned chant for the big matchup this weekend. Dowie said the idea the cheer would be played at the Tulane game was a misunderstanding. “The agreement that was reached between the chancellor, the Athletic Department, the band directors and Student Government was that the band would be silent after every touchdown during the game,” Dowie said. “There was never a plan to actually play the ‘Oh-Wee-Oh’ chant at the game.”Band administrators judged the student section’s decorum after each touchdown for the entire game, waiting to see if obscenities would be inserted. Dowie said he heard a group of students attempting to insert “You suck” but noted a larger portion of the student section covered the offensive cheer with “Go Tigers” instead. “An overwhelming amount of the student section used clean cheers,” Dowie said. “I’m pretty optimistic there will be positive results for the students’ efforts.”Dowie said the change won’t be permanent if students revert back to their old ways. “I’m concerned about that, but if students keep up the clean cheers, the obscenities should be phased out,” Dowie said. “But that’s completely in the hands of the students.”—-Contact Katie Kennedy at [email protected]
