NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin says it’s been encouraging, and even inspiring, to see the long lines and turnout at city polling places.
Nagin, a Democrat, backed Sen. Barack Obama for president. He says Obama had the better platform, ran what he calls a brilliant campaign and made him and others excited about the potential for change.
Nagin says he’s spoken with Obama about the city’s outstanding recovery needs three-plus years after Hurricane Katrina, including sewerage and water infrastructure and greater attention to coastal restoration to help protection the region from future storms.
He says he also sees the need for a Federal Emergency Management Agency official or a recovery point-person to be part of the president’s cabinet.
