BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ State funding for Louisiana’s public universities should be based on graduation rates instead of enrollment rates, Commissioner of Higher Education Sally Clausen said Monday
Clausen said the change would create a stronger incentive for schools to accomplish a central goal: producing graduates who can enter the work force.
Clausen said she’ll back legislation next year to enact the change. She said Louisiana’s other public higher education systems — LSU, Southern, the University of Louisiana System and the community and technical college system — agree on the matter, though the bill won’t be complete until the Legislature next meets in April.
Clausen, former president of the University of Louisiana System, resigned that post four months ago to take the commissioner’s job. She replaced Joseph Savoie, now president of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
