A killer bee, Santa Claus and a girl scout, among others, gathered Wednesday night by the University Student Recreation Complex before running around University Lakes for the 14th annual Ghost Chase 3k. Ghost Chase 3k is a race in memory of former UREC employee Greg Gibben.Twenty-nine University students, University Recreation employees and Baton Rouge residents with pets participated in the race, most donning Halloween costumes while running since the race was held the evening before Halloween. Many students participated in the race for the first time this year. “This is my first opportunity to do the Ghost Chase and get involved,” said Sara Pollock, communication studies senior. Charles Salemi, friend of Gibben, started running the race the year Gibben died. “I won it that year that Greg died,” Salemi said. “I felt like his spirit was pushing me.” Lorilyn Braymer described her brother Gibben as “not a wheelchair athlete but an athlete in a wheelchair, very active and positive.” Gibben committed suicide on Oct. 20, 1995, at the age of 36. “This keeps his spirit there and alive. It brings awareness to suicide,” Braymer said.—-Contact Mary Gonzalez at [email protected]
