BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — He is unopposed for re-election this year, so U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon is spreading the campaign wealth to other Democratic candidates.
Melancon raised more than $49,000 during the third quarter of the year, most of it from political action committees. And he has more than $828,000 in cash on hand for his campaign.
He has sent $42,000 in contributions to other Democratic campaigns in 24 states in recent months. Melancon says he’s trying to get fellow conservative “blue dog” Democrats elected. And he says the contributions give him an opportunity to lobby other members of Congress on issues important to the 3rd Congressional District, such as coastal restoration, hurricane protection and oil production.
