NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana farmers, helped by a recent dry spell, are making progress in harvesting soybeans and rice.
The cotton harvest continued, too, though the crop, hit hard by last month’s hurricanes, is in rough shape.
That’s according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s weekly crop report.
As of Sunday, 98 percent of the state’s rice was harvested; 80 percent of the soybean crop was in, as was 70 percent of the state’s cotton.
Farmers had just begun harvesting sugar cane, with the pace of work lagging the five-year average.
Two-thirds of the state’s cotton is in poor or very poor condition; about one-third of the state’s sugar cane is rated the same.—-Contact The Daily Reveille’s news staff at [email protected]
