The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals found the state’s first 2008 case of the West Nile virus. The discovery occurred during the blood screening of a donor from Livingston Parish, according to a news release
State Epidemiologist Dr. Raoult Ratard said in the news release that this case appeared before the beginning of the typical West Nile season. Ratard said this does not necessarily mean the season has fully begun or will be especially active.
Ratard also mentioned the DHH monitors for the virus year-round.
According to the DHH, West Nile virus is spread to humans through mosquito bites. Typical symptoms are flu-like, and extreme cases of the virus can lead to brain damage or death.
The DHH recommends Louisiana residents ensure their houses are mosquito-proof, empty outdoor containers filled with water, and wear long pants, long sleeves and mosquito repellent.
