BATON ROUGE (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal met with members of Congress in Washington on Tuesday to seek federal aid to help Louisiana recover from hurricanes Gustav and Ike. Jindal met with Louisiana’s delegation and other lawmakers to push for federal money in seven categories: levee construction and coastal protection; aid for farmers and fishermen; extension of “GO Zone” borrowing; and community development block grants, to help cover damage to uninsured properties. Jindal said he believes aid for Louisiana should get passed, some of it in the next week, even though Congress is busy debating the Bush administration’s proposed $700 billion bailout of banks and other financial institutions.
