It’s not every day a goalkeeper scores a goal.LSU freshman goalkeeper Mo Isom has already done it.In her second collegiate game, Isom scored on a 90-yard free kick that bounced over the BYU goalkeeper. The goal was something LSU coach Brian Lee said he has never seen before.A video clip of the score made No. 3 on ESPN’s SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays of the Day that night.”It was kind of unreal to see her,” said former teammate Annie Pease. “I had to pinch myself and make sure it was her. I was really happy for her.””She was born an athlete,” Pease said. “I don’t know any keeper that has the same drive that she has.”Isom didn’t just arrive on the national scene of the soccer world. Before coming to LSU, she was showered with praise and accolades from various sources, including being named an All-American player by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas. Hailing from Marietta, Ga., Isom attended Lassiter High School where she recorded 30 shutouts. She says it is her goal to record a shutout every time she steps onto the field, something she has done in two of her four starts this season.”I would have liked to have all shutouts,” she said. “It’s realistic because it’s what I do. I’m going to try to do it.”Isom was named both the National Player of the Week by Soccer America and MVP of the Lakeside Invitational last week.”We expected her to make a big impact,” Lee said. “Any time you have individual successes, it means the team is doing really well. The two go hand in hand.”Lee said Isom could be the “missing piece” the Tigers have been lacking in seasons past.”She’s a super-athletic, polished, ready to play at the highest level goalkeeper,” Lee said. “[Former keeper] Valerie Vogler had a great season last year for us, but Mo has the potential to take us to the next level.”Isom said she wants to help LSU achieve its goal by winning the Southeastern Conference this season but also has other long-term goals for the program.”I’d like to see us reach the Final Four, and I’d like to see us win a national championship,” she said. “That may take a little more time, but that’s what I’m working towards.”Lee is a believer in Isom’s ability to play on the national level and said he considers her one of the elite players at her position.”She is in a group of goalkeepers who, five years from now, could be the first-team goalkeeper for the U.S. national team,” Lee said.Isom said she is happy with her success thus far, but has bigger goals for her future, including a trip to the 2012 Olympic Games.”Any time you get looks from a national level coach or you get invited to a national team camp, it’s a big deal,” Isom said. “That’s what I’m hoping to work towards.”- – – – Contact Johanathan Brooks at [email protected]
