Hurricane Gustav left campus littered with debris from buildings, limbs and fallen trees, and a team of 40 inmates from the Louisiana Workforce release program are helping with cleanup efforts. The inmates arrived on campus at 7 a.m. Corrections officer Josh Smith said the group will help out on campus “as long as they need us.””We’re trying to clear the walkways and isolate the groups of trash so they can be picked up, and you can have access to your buildings,” he said.Smith said the program’s volunteers are inmates convicted of nonviolent crimes and have less than two years left on their sentence. He said they are from several cities around the state including New Orleans, Franklinton, Houma and Thibodaux.Kelly Gray, an inmate from New Orleans, said he volunteered for the program simply to get outside.”No TV and no electricity — we would rather come out here and work,” he said.—-Contact Angelle Barbazon at [email protected]
