University fans of Troy Bolton, Gabriella Montez and the rest of East High will have to wait longer to get their fix.Reilly Theatre’s production of “High School Musical” has been postponed a week because of Hurricane Gustav.”It is impossible to have all the complex components complete within the original schedule following the week-long closure of the LSU campus,” said Michael Tick, Swine Palace artistic director.Vastine Stabler, director of marketing and public relations for Reilly Theatre, said the crew could not continue constructing the large set or working on the sound equipment during the aftermath of the storm.”I think they’re doing surprisingly well on the acting front,” Stabler noted. “But you can’t just say, ‘We’re going to rehearse for 12 hours.’ They’ve got class.”Because of high ticket demand, the production will be running a week longer than originally scheduled. “High School Musical” will be opening Sept. 24 and will run until Oct. 19. There will also no longer be a preview for the production. Jackie Cali, English freshman, said she loves “High School Musical” even though it can be cheesy at times. ”I actually hadn’t heard that it had been postponed, but I figure one week isn’t going to kill me, so I’m not heartbroken,” Cali said. Swine Palace did not suffer any serious damage because of the storm.”There was a bit of leakage,” Stabler said, “But it doesn’t take a hurricane to do that.”But Stabler said not all damage from the hurricane is physical.”It’s been hard on students and performers,” Stabler said. “We all remember the difficult changes after Katrina, but it seems things are coming back together after Gustav.” Tick said the effects of Gustav will not been seen in the performance. ”When it opens,” Tick said, “audiences will see a fantastic musical full of high-energy music, great performances and a monumental set that completely transforms the Reilly Theatre.”All of the tickets that were previously bought will be honored. Patrons who bought tickets for the canceled shows can exchange them for any available show by calling or visiting the box offices located in Reilly Theatre or the Student Union. There will not be a “pay what you can” night. Students can purchase tickets for “High School Musical” at either of the box offices Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They can also be purchased online at www.swinepalace.org or by phone at (225) 578-3527. Student tickets are $13; faculty, seniors, staff and non-LSU student tickets are $20 and adult tickets are $30.—- Contact Catie Vogels at [email protected]
