Student Government President Colorado Robertson said University officials are planning to print a newsletter to be distributed on campus and to off-campus apartments with information on what is going on at the University.”We hope that everyone made it through the storm safely,” Robertson said. “Our University is working to return everything to normal.”He said Chancellor Michael Martin has been making sure the safety and security of our students is the University’s top priority.Robertson also said the University is beginning the clean up process.”I’m hoping to start the campus as soon as possible no later than Monday,” Robertson said.He said he is unsure when classes will start, but the decision will be made later today. The University is surveying all buildings to make sure the campus is safe for students to come back in large numbers, Robertson said.Rough estimates are that 60 to 80 percent of Baton Rouge is without power, which is a factor in the University’s decision to resume classes. One question on many students’ minds is how will they make up the lost days.Robertson said he and Provost Astrid Merget and are still determining that as information continues to come in.The PMAC lost power Monday around 2 p.m. and did not get it back until after 10 p.m.Two EMS workers told The Daily Reveille on Monday that there was a five-minute window to start up the generators for the PMAC which was missed.”There was a switching problem with on of the generators that we received from FEMA,” Robertson said. “The generator was operating, but it was just a problem of getting it on.”During the 23-hour lockdown Monday, volunteers stepped up to feed more than 550 people with meals-ready-to-eat, or MREs.”It was hot, but I think everyone stayed lighthearted and understood the situation,” Robertson said.Power on campus is up and running up to Highland Road as of 11:00 a.m., according to Robertson. The east side of campus, which includes East Campus Apartments, Herget Hall, Miller Hall and McVoy Hall, still does not have power — with the exception of the 459 Commons Dining Hall.”I’m confident of the EOC as they are assessing damages and beginning to clean up our beautiful campus,” Robertson said.He encouraged all students to tell friends in case they can’t access the information.—-Contact JJ Alcantara at [email protected].
