Trash talk was present among teammates Friday as Purple faced Gold at the LSU swimming and diving intrasquad meet. The Gold Team defeated the Purple Team, 146-126, and the meet provided some encouraging swims for the Tigers on both sides of the pool.”[Hurricane] Gustav, it kind of set us back a week,” said assistant coach Kevin Clements, who coached the Gold Team. “So as far as what they’re doing in the water and how fast they’re swimming out there, I couldn’t be happier.”The captains selected teams Wednesday. Senior Katherine Noland said the Tigers flipped a coin to see who would select the first male and who would select the first female.Noland and the Gold Team selected the first male and took Julius Gloeckner, who rewarded his team with three first-place finishes.Noland said she raised some eyebrows when she selected freshmen girls for the Gold Team.”I am glad I did,” Noland said.Freshman Morgan McGee won the 100 backstroke and the 150 backstroke for the Gold Team.”We had a lot of kids pop out today and earn some surprising victories,” said Gold team co-captain senior Connor Farber. The meet also featured some odd-distanced events which Farber said was refreshing. “The 150 wasn’t too bad,” Farber said. “Normally the 200 yards is a good race for me but also I end up dying in that last 50.”Regular races are usually 100 or 200 yards, but Farber said he had no problem stopping after 150 yards. “I never want to turn that last 50,” he joked.Although the meet was mostly for fun, it still featured serious competition.Senior Roy Chambers edged out junior Nate Telep by .02 seconds to earn the Purple team a victory in the 100 breast.”I just really wanted to have a good race,” Chambers said. “I am really happy I got to win it. Everybody did well. I just got there first.”Noland said the Purple Team talked some trash before the last relay.”We shut them up after we beat them,” she joked. “Ultimately we are all on the same team. All of our people swam really well today, and that was the goal.—-Contact Amos Morale at [email protected]
