When Tyler Crosby parked his car near Patrick F. Taylor Hall one morning, he never expected it to be broken into.”I had always felt like my car was safe on the campus parking lots,” Crosby, a biological engineering senior, said. “I never really expected to have to worry about a break-in.”LSU Police Department spokeswoman Maj. Helen Haire said there were five reported vehicle burglaries on Sept. 16, one on Sept. and four on Sept. 24 — accounting for 10 in just two weeks.Haire said several cars getting broken into at once is nothing new.”It’s not a typical event,” she said. “But it has happened before.”She also said a total of about $11,000 worth of items were stolen.Crosby said the items stolen were sound equipment — two amplifiers, a subwoofer and a head unit.LSUPD spokesman Maj. Lawrence Rabalais said the department increased the patrols of uniformed and plain-clothed officers in the affected areas.”They are looking for any sort of suspicious activity in the parking lots around campus,” Rabalais said.Affected parking lots include the Alex Box Stadium parking lot, Ag Coliseum parking lot, West Parker parking lot, West Campus Apartments parking lot and Nicholson Extension parking lots.Rabalais said he is unsure if one person or group caused all of the incidents.”Last week, the entry into the vehicles were through broken windows,” Rabalais said. “Yesterday, the cars were broken into by punching the locks out of the door.”Haire said it was possible the same person caused the incidents.”They [could have] picked one place and decided to hit several cars,” Haire said. “It’s not unusual.”LSUPD is investigating the burglaries and have not arrested anyone.—-Contact J.J.
