Hurricane Gustav wreaked havoc on a number of things around campus, but one of the most quickly fixed items was Easy Streets. Many of the barriers’ arms were broken off, but the damage was expected. The arms are made to come off quickly if an emergency vehicle has to pass through, which may have happened during the hurricane. But the damage was more likely from the storm.”Many of the arms that were broken off were in areas where it was probably caused by weather because there weren’t medical emergencies by the broken arms,” said Gary Graham, director of Parking, Traffic and Transportation. The arms have all been replaced, and the signs that were bent or broken have all been straightened and fixed. The only other damage sustained by an Easy Streets infrastructure was a gate near Pleasant Hall, which is now operational. Easy Streets was up and running Tuesday morning, the day after the storm made landfall. “We were mainly trying to keep unnecessary traffic out of the center of campus to free up streets for emergency vehicles,” Graham said. He said workers were on campus all week controlling traffic and spent Friday checking for additional damage. Graham said although there was trouble contacting personnel for a few days, the office had no problems staffing the booths because workers have been taking 12-hour shifts.”We still have Burden Oak Lot closed for medical personnel, and Security Lane is also closed,” he said.Monetary totals for Easy Street barrier damages have not yet been calculated.Graham said no preparations for Hurricane Ike will be made, and the office will follow the same procedures as Gustav.—- Contact Ellen Zielinski at [email protected]
