Today is not just hump day, it’s Constitution Day. And Paul Baier, Paul M. Hebert Law Center designated professor, is putting on a play he wrote to celebrate.Baier’s play, “Father Chief Justice: Edward Duglass White and the constitution,” will be open to the public Thursday, Sept. 25 at noon in room 110 of the Law Center. The play was delayed until next week in hopes Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Pascal Calogero will be available to perform in the role of Chief Justice Edward Douglass White. The Louisiana Bar Foundation has sponsored Baier’s play for ten years. On May 22 the play was presented in the Louisiana Supreme Court courtroom, and Calogero played White for the first time. “This time around we’re doing different acts,” said Baier.A federal law created Constitution Day on Sept. 17 in 2004 through an amendment to a spending bill by Senator Robert Byrd, D-W.Va. The law also mandates all every publicly-funded educational institute sponsors an informative program on the Constitution’s history, Baier said. The LSU System requires its entities to adhere to this legal obligation, and Baier assumes responsibility to put on the program through the System’s direction, Baier said.Baier said he hopes the play will spread knowledge of White’s role as U.S. Chief Justice, a fact many of Baier’s students do not know. “I’ll go anywhere in America to talk about the constitution,” Baier said.
