Kayak and canoe rentals resumed Monday after a suspension because of University Lake debris and potential safety risks following Hurricane Gustav.Rentals were stopped because of debris in off-campus lakes. The rentals were halted to keep students safe and equipment ready for use, said Maria Kluemper, assistant director of the University Student Recreational Sports and Adventure Complex. The complex is located at the corner of River Road and Gourrier Lane. Across campus, the Baton Rouge Beach on Standford Avenue is under construction. Plans include building a new parking lot, pedestrian bridge and exercise station according to BREC’s Web site. City Park off Dalrymple Drive is open for boating purposes. Kayak rentals cost $15 per day and $20 during the weekend for students. Rentals are available Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. or by appointment. The complex rents out about 10 boats per week, Kluemper said, and did not lose a significant amount of money from the rental suspension. Hurricane Gustav also affected the rowing club’s practices. “We haven’t had practice all this semester due to Gustav,” said Adam Graham, rowing club member. The club’s dock, located off Dalrymple Drive north of the intersection with State Street, sustained damage from Gustav.”The dock basically split into two pieces,” said Ann Elise Borchardt, rowing member. The crew cleared off the branches of two fallen oaks and pieced the dock together. More repairs are necessary. The crew has been running the campus lakes and working out to compensate for lost practices, Borchadt said.—-Contact Mary Gonzalez at [email protected]
