Proud AmericanLightSource LLCD-Moviegoers will find it hard to sit through this one. People expecting a poignant documentary about what makes America great are instead treated to a sappy drama. Instead of inspiring stories of success and triumph, cheesy scenarios are horribly acted out. The only redeeming quality about this “documentary” is the beautiful cinematography of American landscapes. What could have been a patriotic, inspiring film is instead a ridiculous made-for-TV movie.B. LEJEUNE- – – -The WomenPicturehouse EntertainmentF+An obvious attempt to get Sex and the City-loving ladies into the theater, “The Women” is a mess of estrogen and expensive clothes — set in New York City, of course. But the movie’s overload of sappy “sisterhood” moments and thinly-veiled man-hating make it suitable for Lifetime, not HBO. Most tragic is the waste of Annette Bening, who after the masterpiece “American Beauty” somehow found herself starring in this painfully predictable, two-hour tampon commercial.J. GUTIERREZ- – – -Righteous KillOverture Films CDon’t expect to see the Oscar-worthy greatness that made De Niro and Pacino famous in “Righteous Kill.” It’s not there. Neither actor seemed challenged in these roles at all; they barely had to act. Pacino was stoic, and De Niro just recreated his character from “Raging Bull.” Not to say “Righteous Kill” was a horrible movie, but with cop dramas, audiences have seen it all before. And that makes for a predictable and forgettable movie, which is exactly what “Righteous Kill” is.A. FELIX- – – -Do you believe in Gosh?Comedy Central Rec.AMitch Hedberg fans won’t be disappointed with Hedberg’s newest album, which was recorded two months before the comedian’s death in 2005. While Hedberg’s style of short, one-liner comedy has not changed since his last album, his new material is fresh and simple, yet hilarious. Listeners will surely match the loud laughter throughout the album.B. STEPHENS- – – -George ClintonGeorge Clinton and His Gangsters of LoveShanachieA-The Godfather of funk is back with an album full of covers that would make any Chee Weez fan’s head explode. On his first album in three years, Clinton teams up with a variety of artists such as Sly Stone, Carlos Santana and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The album also features one new song, “Mathematics of Love,” which could be a preview of new P-funk material Clinton says will released in early 2009. With his latest effort, Clinton proves time and time again that funk cannot die.J. CHENIER- – – -The Pussycat DollsDoll DominationA&M RecordsDThe Pussycat Dolls are infamous for their catchy yet slightly irritating lyrics. And their sophomore album, Doll Domination, is no different from their first. There are a couple of hit singles, such as “When I Grow Up” and “Whatcha Think About That” that people will drunkenly dance to. And then there are some that could be used as military torture devices. But beware. Even if you are not a fan, most of these songs will get stuck in your head.D. ZERBY- – – -EDITOR’S PICKBurn After ReadingWorking Title FilmsFor Fans of: Fargo, The Big LebowskiGeorge Clooney, Brad Pitt and John Malkovich star in the Coen brothers’ latest cinematic effort, “Burn After Reading.” This dark comedy follows the misadventures of two fitness trainers as they attempt to blackmail a former CIA analyst. While this film was by no means a formidable follow-up to last year’s critical success, “No Country for Old Men,” Joel and Ethan Coen manage to craft a complex plot that will keep audiences interested until the very end.S.
