Redshirt junior safety DaJuan Morgan has declared for the NFL Draft and has signed with agent Ben Dogra of CAA Sports, he said Wednesday.
He is currently in Arizona training and has been there since Jan. 2, he said. In Arizona, he is working with coaches on “conditioning, training, position drills and nutrition.”
He said his decision came down to a lot of factors — but going to the NFL was something he’s always thought about.
“I have just been praying, and I wanted to fulfill my childhood dream,” Morgan said. “I wanted to take this opportunity while I had my health. I prayed with my family, and my mom is with me — my family is with me.”
Morgan said N.C. State’s coaches didn’t want him to leave Raleigh, but they said they would be there to help him during the process.
“They wanted me to stay. But at the same time, they wanted what was best for me,” he said. “After I made my decision, they wished me well. They told me I could come back if I wanted to.”
While telling the coaches was tough for Morgan, he said it wasn’t hard talking to his brother, DeAndre, a starting cornerback last season.
“It wasn’t tough at all — he was happy for me,” DaJuan said. “Growing up, that was all we thought about. He’s happy, and he’s behind me 100 percent.””
In regards to what round he might get drafted, DaJuan said he “doesn’t try to get into” the talk about where he could get selected.
“I’ve heard various things,” he said. “If I run well, I’ve heard I could go as high as the second round.”
Morgan said it made his decision easier to know that he was extremely close to graduating — with only an internship and an Internet class needed to receive a diploma. He said he is “working with an academic advisor” and hopes to complete the requirements.
Morgan finished last season with a team-high 97 tackles and tied for a team-high with three interceptions.
