The Indian Student Association gathered at the International Cultural Center on Saturday to discuss the University’s efforts to ensure student safety.
Members of the ISA discussed a need for a campus safety forum. The group also cited failing security measures and updates by the by the University’s police department.
ISA members also expressed the need to keep the investigation of the recent on-campus double homicide in the minds of all students and authorities.
“There should be a committee of four or five students constantly meeting with LSU PD authorities,” said Dr. S.S. Iyengar, ISA faculty advisor.
Students expressed their concerns about the lack of light in busy areas of campus and the downplay of attempted home invasions.
“Be careful, call Campus Transit and know LSUPD’s number,” said ISA president Ravitej Kavalipati. “Discuss the safety of the places you are going with others.”
The ISA is contemplating a candle light vigil on Feb. 13 in remembrance of the two slain students. The organization has also written a petition of proposed security measures that will be presented to the chancellor.
All ISA members were encouraged to attend the Campus Safety Forum which will be held on Jan. 31 at 3:10 p.m. in the Hill Memorial Library. The forum will be hosted by the University’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors and will include the associate vice chancellor and several LSUPD authorities.
