Nearly five months after former chancellor Sean O’Keefe’s resignation, the search for a new University chancellor is over.
In a unanimous decision Thursday, the LSU Board of Supervisors approved Michael Martin as the University’s new chancellor.
LSU System President John Lombardi introduced the motion to the Board and recommended Martin. Lombardi and Martin have worked together before: When Lombardi was president at the University of Florida he hired Martin as a vice president.
“One of the things we like about Martin is that he comes to us after having been president of a campus with a mission very similar to our own,” Lombardi said. “He has demonstrated the kind of independent leadership that is required to move a first-rate campus to a higher level.”
Martin becomes the University’s new chancellor after serving nearly four years as president of New Mexico State University.
Lombardi said Martin is a “man of great charm, energy and strength.”
“It’s with that sort of enthusiasm echoed by our campus constituency, our search committee, and me that I bring him to you,” Lombardi said.
Alvin Kimble, Board member, said he had “no reservations whatsoever” about recommending Martin to the board.
Martin’s contract officially begins Aug. 1.
