Four LSU starters scored in double digits in Tuesday night’s game in the PMAC against arguably their best competition so far this season. The LSU (6-0) starters scored 77 points en route to a 84–63 rout of Big West foe Cal State Fullerton (3-5).”This was a good game for us, just from the standpoint … that it was a team that would test our reserve and our veterans,” said LSU coach Trent Johnson. “We did a nice job.”Senior guard Marcus Thornton led all scorers with 22 points. Junior forward Tasmin Mitchell and senior center Chris Johnson added 16 each, and sophomore guard Bo Spencer chipped in 13 points.Senior guard Garrett Temple was the only starter to score fewer than 10 points, but what he lacked in points he made up for in other categories. The Baton Rouge native amassed 10 rebounds, a team-high seven assists, and three steals.Mitchell also had a career high in rebounds with 15.The Tigers outrebounded the Titans, 56 – 27, as a team.”The last few games, I haven’t been getting that many rebounds,” Mitchell said. “I told myself I was going to go out there and try to get everything that comes off the rim, and that’s what I tried to do.”The teams played evenly throughout the first few minutes of the contest, which featured three ties and four lead changes. But after that, it was all LSU for the rest of the half. The Tigers pulled ahead for good on a Marcus Thornton 3-pointer that gave LSU an 11-9 lead.LSU would lead by as many as seven during the next seven minutes, but back-to-back buckets by the Titans would bring LSU’s lead back down to 26-24.The teams traded baskets, and LSU then went on a 13–5 run to end the half.Spencer hit two 3-pointers to close the run and give LSU an 11-point lead at the break, with the score 42-31.The Titans opened the second half on a 5-0 scoring run to cut the LSU lead to 6 points, but it was the closest they would come for the rest of the contest.Within minutes, the LSU lead was the largest it had been all night at 13, and the Tigers were no longer in jeopardy of being overtaken.—-Contact Johanathan Brooks at jbrooks.com
