For some years now, the word “terrorism” has been limited to the Middle East. Just as the blood spilled in these regions dries, new blood is spilled in a forgotten part of the world. The November Mumbai attacks were a series of 10 pre-designed attacks committed by terrorists across Mumbai, the largest city in India. Indian security officials were only able to regain control after three days.Reports, though still ambiguous, claim 172 people — including at least 34 foreign nationals — are dead with at least 293 injured.A previously unknown organization calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the terror attacks by proudly sending e-mails to foreign media outlets. The terrorist groups in one way could be commended for their backlash effect. They are like pimples: Pop one and they only erupt in different, unexpected areas causing more harm to the precious face.According to most skin magazines, the best way to tackle pimples is using Proactiv. People should use skin care tactics and strategies to deal with terrorism in the world. It’s a stretch, but bare with me.Instead of spending precious time attacking one region of the world and destroying one terrorist group at a time, we should destroy terrorist groups across the borders even before they become known and attack. This may seem like a ridiculous proposition for one country to uphold, but that’s why we have the United Nations. The U.N. — comprised of 192 countries including North Korea — was created at the end of World War II to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights and achieving world peace.World peace seems so far away that even the U.N. cannot guarantee. The world has many problems. Darfur, Sudan’s Hutus and the Tutsis, the Israel/Palestinian conflict, anarchy in Somalia, ethnic clashes in Congo — the list goes on.The U.N. was created to guarantee a neutral platform for negotiation. People should compel the U.N. to fulfill its obligation. The U.S., which hosts the U.N. headquarters in New York City, funds 22 percent of the U.N. budget. With all their power, I don’t understand why is the U.N. sitting on its butt without making a move.Because it can’t. The U.N. is tied down by member nations because delegates cannot make a neutral decision to benefit the world. Instead, delegates argue day in and day out about what actions ought to be committed to protect mankind instead of taking them. The people that endorse the U.N. must demand action. The structure of the U.N., as it stands now, is too weak to force nations to help. The U.N., thus, must be reformed. Now, this is not advocating the melting of borders and the creation of one world government; importance of retaining national individuality and national sovereignty is regarded when making the required amendments to the U.N. The U.N. needs enough power to coerce nations into providing the right amount of resources, and if need be, the U.N. needs to usurp the power of rogue nations to maintain peace for the rest of society. When a society is beyond reparable and the national government does not have the capacity to solve its conflicts, the U.N. needs the ability and power to provide aid.Just as the outer structure of the U.N. needs reform, the internal structure direly requires change as well.Corruption, bribery and State-to-State animosity need to be pushed off the cliff. Instead, delegates need to maintain a neutral stance, mitigating bias for personal countries and working toward achieving the purpose of the organization’s creation. But many people disagree. Nations such as the U.S., North Korea and China do not like to be told what to do. Many people also object to giving the U.N. more power. Giving the corrupt U.N. more power frightens people. If the U.N. is so useless and beyond reform, then the U.S. and many countries alike should not pour in so much money every year. If one is paying for a good product, one should be able to see a positive difference after using that product, or their money should be given back. Yet, since the creation of the U.N., we have not seen anything but a steady rise in chaos and U.N. helplessness. To solve all the problems effectively, the burden needs to be placed on all nations — not one. The U.S., in all its greatness, cannot solve world problems and guarantee world peace.Mumbai should act as a catalyst in creating a better plan in the “War on Terrorism,” a better plan that involves the world working together, to dispel terror and fear, one nation at a time.—-Contact Dini Parayitam at [email protected]
