PLAQUEMINE, La. (AP) — Tiger Truck Stop can keep the exhibit it’s named for — a 550-pound tiger — after a judge temporarily blocked a state wildlife order to remove the animal, which has become a popular roadside attraction in Grosse Tete.State district Judge J. Robin Free granted the order Tuesday to truck stop owner Michael Sandlin. Sandlin sued to stop Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries from forcing him to remove the animal or have it taken away. Sandlin can keep the exhibit until a Dec. 29 hearing on his request for a permanent injunction on the order.Meanwhile, Sandlin will seek changes to a 1993 Iberville law that outlaws the keeping of a “wild, exotic, vicious animal or reptile for display or for exhibition purposes.””A large portion of the business at Tiger Truck Stop comes from customers stopping to view the tiger exhibit,” the lawsuit states. The lawsuit also said Sandlin would “suffer irreparable harm” if he was forced to get rid of the tiger by the state’s Tuesday deadline.”If he is forced to relocate the tiger or if the tiger is seized then he will most likely be prevented from bringing it back to the State of Louisiana,” the lawsuit said.Sandlin has long been under fire from animal welfare advocates because of the exhibit, which includes a cage with a concrete floor and a cement block den.One of those advocates, Sky Williamson, has campaigned to move the tiger and said she is disappointed Sandlin filed the suit. The lawsuit says that Sandlin has exhibited tigers for 20 years at the truck stop about 20 miles west of Baton Rouge without any injuries to humans or escapes. Sandlin’s attorney, Joseph B. Dupont, said Sandlin should be “grandfathered” out of the 1993 parish ordinance dealing with exotic animals. The local rule was never enforced against Sandlin until he tried to apply for a state permit needed to keep exotic animals. The permit requires him to comply with all local ordinances and regulations. Sandlin plans to ask the Iberville Parish Council to amend the 1993 ordinance.
